Fibromyalgia

Natural Remedies For Fibromyalgia

It affects about two out of every hundred adults, especially women. Fibromyalgia is a chronic pain syndrome consisting of general muscle pain and muscle stiffness associated with (sometimes extreme) fatigue, sleep disorders, headaches, anxiety, depression, allergies, concentration and memory disorders, temperature rises, and intestinal complaints. This disorder occurs particularly in women between the ages of 20 and 60.

Treatment Options

The most common complaints (pain – fatigue – sleep disorders – stiffness) can be reduced with a number of treatments. Sometimes a  combination can ensure that the patient is able to deal with the complaints better.

However, no two people with fibromyalgia are the same. This means that the treatment will be different for everyone. Often, simply trying it out is the only way to determine whether it has any effect.

Pain relief. Since there is no known unambiguous cause, there is no standard drug to cure fibromyalgia. Painkillers, such as paracetamol, are most commonly prescribed, but at most remove the sharp edges of the pain. Anti-depressants are also often prescribed.

Exercises improve physical condition and endurance. They are also important to learn how to dose daily efforts better. However, these exercises (aquagym, swimming, cycling, walking) should always be adapted to your own abilities. For this reason, they are best exercised individually in the beginning and preferably under the supervision of an expert.

Relaxation exercises, yoga, and meditation can help to better control the various stress situations.

Way of life. Conscious living, gasping back in time and making real demands contribute positively to dealing with fibromyalgia.

Nutrition. Nutrition also plays an important role. If, for example, you want to combat fatigue and gain more energy, you should also pay attention to your food. Food supplements can be part of this. It can be very wise to discuss your eating habits with a nutritionist. But even without the advice of an expert, it is not difficult to adopt better eating habits.

Supplements

There are several substances that can relieve the symptoms of fibromyalgia. For example, there are substances that help relax the muscles, promote muscle energy metabolism or support a healthy night's sleep. Because of the diversity of complaints one will usually benefit most from a combination of different nutrients or herbs.

Fibromyalgia can unfortunately not be cured by supplementation. But by reducing the complaints they can improve the quality of your life.

There are many substances that are used in fibromyalgia. Below are just a few of the popular remedies.

Magnesium

Magnesium has a relaxing effect on the muscles. Magnesium is therefore a widely used mineral by people with fibromyalgia. Fibromyalgia patients are more likely to have abnormal magnesium levels. The exact relationship between low magnesium levels and fibromyalgia is not clear yet.

Valerian

Fibromyalgia is often accompanied by a disturbed sleep-wake rhythm. The herb Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) promotes the natural sleep rhythm. Unlike medication, valerian is not addictive and does not cause a dull feeling in the morning. Valerian should not be used during pregnancy and when breastfeeding.

Coenzyme Q10

Q10 is known as an ancillary to energy production in the body's cells. Recent studies show that supplementation with Q10 in fibromyalgia can lead to the relief of symptoms such as pain, stiffness, and fatigue.  Q10 is known as a safe substance. Because fibromyalgia is often associated with reduced production of ATP (= energy), supplementation is definitely recommended.

Vitamine C

Vitamin C is an active substance in many biochemical processes that take place in cells and tissue. For example, it is important for the formation of collagen which is an essential building block for connective tissue, bones, cartilage, and teeth.

MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane)

MSM improves the permeability of cell membranes so that moisture and waste products are better removed, and nutrients are better supplied. MSM is a natural source of sulfur with high bioavailability (i.e. it is easily absorbed). MSM is often applied in joint formulas.

The sulfur compound appears to be crucial in protecting the body against free radicals. Moreover, it is of great importance for the suppleness of connective tissue. MSM is often combined with Glucosamine and Chondroitin.

Summary and Advice

Digestive problems are common. Healthy nutrition, exercise, and less stress can often make a big difference. For problems with digestion, such as bloating and rumbling of the intestines, it is recommended to take a dietary supplement with meals that contain enzymes and/or herbs to support digestion.

A healthy intestinal flora – with a good ratio of good and bad bacteria – is not only important for intestinal problems. The intestinal flora also plays an important role in digestion and the immune system.

A healthy intestinal flora can remedy and prevent problems. A good quality probiotic preparation can make a beneficial contribution to increasing the good bacteria in the intestines.
